  An element State: Solid; Group: IIIB (Lanthanide Series); Atomic No: 60; Atomic Wt: 144-24; Valence: 3; Isotopes: 7 stable. A rare-earth metal, m.p. 1024 °C (1875 °F), obtained from monazite sands and bastnasite ore. It readily tarnishes and is attacked by atmospheric moisture.

  It has too little strength for structural use but has some value as an alloying agent. Its scavenging effect makes it useful in refinig ferrous alloys. Some of its compounds have been found to have moderate toxicity for experimental animal.
