Date :Définition
An element. State: Gas; Group: IIIB; Atomic No.: 39; Atomic Wt.: 88.9059; Valence: 3. Though it is not of the rare-earth metals, yttrium, m.p. 1509 °C (2748 °F), is very similar to them and is always associated with them in such ores as monazite and gadolinite (Scandinavia, Idaho, Australia, Brazil). It forms compounds with oxygen and the halogen elements, and with carbon.
Notes :
Derived from Ytterby, a town in Sweden.
The major use of the metal is as an additive or alloying ingredient with a number of other metals; additions of small percentages increase resistance to oxidation at high temperatures and have other beneficial effects upon the alloy systems to which it is added. Yttrium oxide is used with europium in phosphors for the red color in TV tubes, in yttrium-iron garnets for microwave filters, and in nuclear technology. Yttrium has only one stable form and is nontoxic. It is classed as a rare metal.Termes :
