  An element. State: solid; group: IIIB (lanthanide series); atomic no.: 63; atomic wt.:151.96; valence: 2,3; isotopes: 5 stable. The most reactive of the rare earth family of metals, europium, m.p. 826 °C (1519 °F), is obtained from monazite sands and bastnasite ore.

  Its high neutron cross-section (4600) barns makes it usable as a control element in nuclear reactors; this use virtually disappeared in 1965 when its unique ability to activate yttrium compounds in red television phosphors led to its almost exclusive use for this purpose. It forms such compounds as the oxide, sulfate, nitrate, chloride, and oxalate.
