An element. State: solid; group: IIIB (lanthanide series); atomic no.: 63; atomic wt.:151.96; valence: 2,3; isotopes: 5 stable. The most reactive of the rare earth family of metals, europium, m.p. 826 °C (1519 °F), is obtained from monazite sands and bastnasite ore.

Its high neutron cross-section (4600) barns makes it usable as a control element in nuclear reactors; this use virtually disappeared in 1965 when its unique ability to activate yttrium compounds in red television phosphors led to its almost exclusive use for this purpose.
