Samarium, m.p. 1072 °C (1962 °F), is a member of the rare-earth series of metals. It is very hard and steel-like in appearance. It is a reducing agent for many metallic oxides, carbon monoxide, and carbon tetrachloride. It is combustible at about 150 °C (300 °F).
Note :
It has a high neutron absorption capacity; its compounds have important specialized uses in glass, phosphors, lasers, and thermoelectric devices. Its scarcity restricts wider use.
