This is the most wide-ranging species of oak. It is found in the Deciduous Forest Region, in scattered localities through most of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest Region, in the central part of the Acadian Forest Region and in the Boreal Forest Region in the zone of transition to the prairies. In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, when in exposed locations, the tree is often stunted or even reduced to the extent of becoming a shrub.
