This species is still poorly understood. In previous editions, it has been referred to under various names, or as a variety of White Birch having the botanical name Betula papyrifera var. humilis (Reg.) Fern. & Raup. Some other authors have described it under the name Betula resinifera (Reg.) Britton, while still others have used Betula alaskana Sarg., or Betula papyrifera var. neoalaskana (Sarg.) Raup. All of the published descriptions refer to it as a small tree which, from a distance, resembles White Birch, and which, when growing in association with White Birch, interbreeds to produce populations of small trees that are mixtures of the two. This tends to add to the difficulty of describing a typical form.
