As quoted in Airframe & Powerplant. Mechanics. Airframe Handbook: "The profile of a conventional wing, shown in figure 2-3 ((figure 2-3. Airflow over a wing section)), is an excellent example of an airfoil". That explains why the term "airfoil" is usually associated with a wing section or wing profile.
"An airfoil profile is the outline of an airfoil section. An airfoil section is a cross section of an airfoil parallel to the plane of symmetry or to a specified reference plane. /.../. An airfoil is any surface, such as an airplane wing, aileron, or rudder, designed to obtain reaction from the air through which it moves. /.../. As a matter of fact, the three terms are used interchangeably in conversation, even by people who know the technical distinctions". In fact, the terms "airfoil", "airfoil section", "airfoil profile", "airfoil shape", "wing section", and "wing profile" are all used interchangeably in conversation. The McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology defines the term "airfoil profile" as follows: "the closed curve defining the external shape of the cross section of an airfoil". Equivalent terms are airfoil section, airfoil shape, and wing section.
Since the terms "airfoil section", "airfoil profile", and "airfoil shape" are aerodynamic concepts, they are not our matter. However, in our study of the term "airfoil", these terms are retained because of their relationship with the term studied.Termes :
