The Smith-Putnam machine was of this type. Large horizontal-axis machines would be used by utilities in wind areas to supplement their generating power. An experimental 100-kilowatt (KW) wind turbine generator was built for ERDA in 1975 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Lewis Research Center at its Plum Brook test site near Sandusky, Ohio. Technical improvements resulting from the testing of this machine will be incorporated in large wind turbines to be built in 1977-78. The 100 KW wind turbine, called "Mod-O", has two slender rotor blades that look like airplane wings, mounted on an open truss tower 100 feet (30 meters) high. Each aluminum blade is 62.5 feet (18.8m) in length, and the blades together span 125 feet (37.5m). The machine starts to generate power in an eight mph (12.8 kmph) and operates at its rated power in an 18 mph (28.8 kmph) wind. It could provide enough electricity for about 30 average sized homes.
