Two dogwoods that are commonly found as shrubs but may occasionally attain tree size are the "roughleaf dogwood" (Cornus drummondii C. A. Meyer) and the "roundleaf dogwood" (Cornus rugosa Lam.) The roughleaf dogwood has leaves that are rough above and have scattered stiff hairs. Other features are white fruits and greyish-brown branchlets with a slender brown pith. It is restricted to a few places along the shores of Lake Erie and owing to its scarcity is seldom seen. The roundleaf dogwood has almost circular leaves, with a white woolly texture on the underface. The fruits are blue, the branchlets are greenish red (usually blotched with purple) and the pith is white. It extends across the eastern half of Canada from southern Manitoba to the maritime provinces.
