A term referring to the humus formation as a whole, i.e. it includes particular chemical and physical characteristics as well as a particular profile development with all its horizons, their internal structure and the totality of their life.
A humus form is a certain genetically determined vertical succession of humus types.Note :
The concept of humus form is bound up with the formation of a typical humus profile (336) and a soil life produced by the activities of the microbial and macrobial biotic communities. It includes both organic and inorganic matter and the way both are mixed or combined with one another. It is a concept in nature like that of the soil itself, of which it is a part. In terms of profile nomenclature it more or less comprises the "living A" horizon plus the L layer on the surface although no humus form should be thought of in isolation from the other parts of the soil.
