  Définition

  A description of the retention of a solute on a column in terms of its adjusted retention volume relative to those of n-alkanes; the retention index is expressed as the number of carbon atoms multiplied by 100 of a hypothetical n-alkane which under the same conditions would have the same retention volume as that of the solute.
