  A mixture of gases suitable for the catalytic synthesis of methanol or ammonia, derived by thermal breakdown of organic matter or fossil fuels.
  
  The name given to the mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen produced as the result on the first stages of oil or coal conversion processes.

  Note :

  The product stream is also likely to contain a variety of other liquid and gaseous products and impurities, and it is usually necessary to purify synthesis gas before it can be up-graded into useful liquid or gaseous products.
