A smooth, viscous liquid at room temperature, becoming a yellowhish solid below 5 °C (42 °F). It is made by reacting benzene with mixed acid, thus introducing nitrogen into the molecule, the formula being C6H5NO2.
Note :
An important organic intermediate, it is used in making such dye bases as benzidine and aniline, as well as other nitrogenous chemicals. It is very poisonous, and inhalation of its fumes should be avoided. It can be further nitrated to di- and trinirobenzenes.
