Date :Définition
Unless otherwise indicated, this term refers to a mixture of several isomers and is derived from either amyl alcohol or fused oil by reaction with acetic acid. The formula is CH3COOC5H11. Amyl acetate is a flammable liquid having a penetrating odor suggestive of bananas and is sometimes called banana oil. Its chief uses are as a solvent in leather polishes and for fingernail lacquers, as a food additive in flavoring fruit essences, and in textile finishing operations. It has also been used in mine rescue work, as the odor is detectable through fissures and pores in rocky soils. It has especially good solvency for cellulose derivatives and thus is often a component of nitrocellulose lacquers.
