A flammable, irritating, and poisonous liquid with the low boiling point of 20 °C (68 °F); its formula is CH3CHO. It should be handled with the greatest care as it forms hazardous vapors at temperatures far below zero. Made by the oxidation of ethylene or by the dehydrogenation of ethyl alcohol, it is second only to formaldehyde in industrial importance.
Flammable liquid. An important intermediate in the production of a number of synthetic resins.Notes :
Its major use is in the production of acetic acid and its derivatives, acetone and various acetates, and of numerous other organic chemicals. Minor uses are as a flavoring agent in food products and as a preservative and stiffening agent in proteinaceous materials such as leather. It polymerizes to form paraldehyde.
Mainly used in the formation of polyvinyl acetal; it is also an intermediate in the production of acetic acid.Terme :
