  Définition

  An aromatic hydrocarbon, m.p. 217 °C (423 °F), derived from coal tar; its molecule consists of three fused (attached) benzene rings, the formula being C₆H₄(CH)₂C₆H₄. It is chemically related to naphthalene and phenanthrene. One of its unusual properties is the blue fluorescence exhibited by its crystals; another is its ability to act as a semiconductor, a characteristic possessed by only a few organic materials. Anthracene is the source of the broad and useful family of alizarin dyes as well as of phenanthrene and carbazole. The coal-tar fraction from which it is obtained (anthracene oil) has minor use as a wood preservative.
