Date :Définition
An aromatic hydrocarbon, m.p. 217 °C (423 °F), derived from coal tar; its molecule consists of three fused (attached) benzene rings, the formula being C6H4(CH)2C6H4. It is chemically related to naphthalene and phenanthrene. One of its unusual properties is the blue fluorescence exhibited by its crystals; another is its ability to act as a semiconductor, a characteristic possessed by only a few organic materials. Anthracene is the source of the broad and useful family of alizarin dyes as well as of phenanthrene and carbazole. The coal-tar fraction from which it is obtained (anthracene oil) has minor use as a wood preservative.
