Date :Définition
An extremely powerful solvent which can be made from dimethylsulfide or recovered from the lignin in pulping waste liquors. It has the formula (CH3)2SO. It is hygroscopic, almost colorless, and nontoxic. Reactions occur in a solution of DMSO many times more rapidly than in other solvents. It also has the unique property of extremely rapid penetration of both plant and animal tissue, thus greatly aiding the administration of drugs and other medicinals.
Note :
It was first manufactured on a commercial scale in 1954, its importance being recognized by chemists in the paper industry, who were able to extract it from the lignin in sulfide effluents. Among its other uses are as a spinning solvent for synthetic fibers, an industrial cleaner, and a polymerization solvent.
