A strong acid which is a solid at 100% strength and liquid at lower concentrations; it is also known as orthophosphoric acid, having the formula H3PO4. It is made from phosphate rock either by reaction with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid or by heating in an electric furnace with carbon and silica to evolve phosphorus, which is then burned to P2O5 and hydrated.
Note :
The acid is used to make a number of phosphates and as the base for a range of fertilizers, soil conditioners, detergents, and metal-cleaning preparations. It is also used in the food industries as an acidulant and in pharmaceutical products. It is irritating to the skin, and strong solutions should be handled with care.
