The simplest carboxylic acid, with formula HCOOH, m.p. 8.4 °C (47 °F). The term is derived from the latin word for ant (formica), since this acid has been found to be produced by these insects, as well as by bees. It is produced by these industrially from sodium formate and sulfuric acid, the sodium formate being the result of reaction of carbon monoxide and caustic soda.
Colourless, caustic liquid with uses as a synthesis intermediate, food preservative, latex coagulant and in medecine.Note :
Formic acid is a poisonous liquid which is extremely irritating to the skin and eyes and can be a strong allergean. It is used in textile dyeing, leather tanning, electroplating, and in pesticide manufacture. It is also a reducing agent.
