An aromatic aldehyde, b.p. 179.5 °C (355 °F), occurring naturally in oil of bitter almonds; it is a volatile liquid of pleasant odor and sharp taste, having the formula C6H5CHO. It is derived synthetically from toluene by oxidation or by chlorination followed by hydrolysis. Its chief uses are as a source of benzoic acid, as a dye intermediate, solvent, and in the manufacture of chemicals used in photography. It is combustible, but essentially nontoxic.
