  Définition

  An aromatic aldehyde, b.p. 179.5 °C (355 °F), occurring naturally in oil of bitter almonds; it is a volatile liquid of pleasant odor and sharp taste, having the formula C₆H₅CHO. It is derived synthetically from toluene by oxidation or by chlorination followed by hydrolysis. Its chief uses are as a source of benzoic acid, as a dye intermediate, solvent, and in the manufacture of chemicals used in photography. It is combustible, but essentially nontoxic.
  
  Organic intermediate and solvent for some resins and certain cellulose compounds.
