  Définition

  Two unsaturated hydrocarbon gases are included under this name: butene-1 (formula CH₂=CHCH₂CH₃) and butene-2 (formula CH₃CH=CHCH₃); the latter has both cis- and trans- isomers. The butenes are derived from petroleum refinery gases and are used in making butadiene, high-grade gasolines, and as sources of synthetic chemicals containing four and five carbon atoms in the chain.

  Note :

  They are highly flammable and explosive and are shipped in steel cylinders. Butene-1 can be polymerized to polybutene to form a useful elastomeric plastic. Butenes are widely used in liquefied form as household and industrial fuels (LPG).
