A light organic liquid, b.p. 152 °C (306 °F), having the formula C6H5C(CH3)2. It can be made by a catalytic reaction of propylene with benzene or as a distillation product of petroleum or coal tar. It is quite toxic and is absorbed by the skin. It also catches fire readily. The prime use of cumene is as a source of phenol and its by-product acetone which result from its oxidation. It has some application as a solvent.
