Date :Définition
A crystalline powder, this benzenoid compound is an important industrial chemical derived catalytically from xylene or naphthalene; its formula is C6H4(CO)2O, m.p. 131 °C (268 °F).
Note :
Addition of water to the molecule gives phthalic acid, C6H4(CO2H)2. The anhydride is a basic component of a broad range of plasticizers and modifiers used in plastics processing, as well as of alkyd and other polyester resins. It is reacted with phenol to produce phenolphtalein, used as an indicator, a dye, and a pharmaceutical. Phthalic anhydride is irritant to tissue and should be handled with care.
