  A collective term referring to any of the numerous compounds and products made by reacting cellulose with various chemicals, usually involving substitution of groups of one kind or another for the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose. The products of these reactions are either plastics or gum-like in nature; they include rayon, nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate and its derivatives, and various types of methylcellulose.
