Date :Définition
A monohydric alcohol having four isomeric forms: normal CH3CH2CH2CH2OH; iso- (CH3)2CHCH2OH; secondary CH3CH2CHOHCH3; tertiary (CH3)3COH. All these, except tertiary, are liquids having limited solubility in water, of varying degrees of flammability, and of moderate toxicity. Their chief industrial value lies in their solvent power. The normal compound was formerly derived by fermentation of carbohydrates but is now made synthetically by aldol condensation of acetaldehyde or by oxidation of petroleum gases; its major uses are in nitrocellulose lacquers and other resin coatings, as a selective solvent for pharmaceutical products, in plasticizers, and in manufacturing chemically related organics.
Note :
Isobutyl alcohol has quite similar properties and uses. Secondary butyl alcohol, made from butylene derived from petroleum cracking, is mainly used to manufacture methyl ethyl ketone; other uses include solvent blends for alkyd resin coatings, and in synthetic perfumes, dyes, etc. The tertiary form, also petroleum-derived, is a crystalline solid at room temperature; it is also completely water-soluble and the most flammable of the group. Besides being an effective solvent, it has specialized uses as a dehydrating agent, in preparing artificial musk, and as a denaturant for ethyl alcohol.
