Date :Définition
An organic peroxide with formula (C6H5CO)2O2, containing 6.5% atomic oxygen. It is in the form of white crystals and is made by reaction of sodium peroxide and benzoyl chloride. A strong oxidizing agent, it is used in bleaching organic materials such as flour, vegetable oils, etc. Its most notable property is its ability to form free radicals by decomposition; these initiate the molecular chain reactions involved in polymerization. Thus, the most important use of benzoyl peroxide is as a source of free radicals for addition polymerization; it has been used to vulcanize rubber in the absence of sulfur.
Note :
Benzoyl peroxide may explode when heated and is a fire hazard when in contact with combustible materials.
