Date :Définition
A dihydric alcohol with formula CH2OHCH2OH, b.p. 197.2 °C (387 °F); it is a hygroscopic liquid of medium viscosity obtained from ethylene, chiefly by catalytic oxidation.
Solvent for resins and cellulose derivatives, and a component of some polyester fibres.Note :
Its major use is as a permanent antifreeze; of secondary importance is its use as a polyester fibre intermediate. It is also used in hydraulic fluids, heat-transfer agents, and humectants for cellophane, fibres, and adhesives. The proprietary "cellosolve" groups of mono-and dialkyl ethers of ethylene glycol are important solvents derived from ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is combustible and sufficiently toxic to preclude its use in foods. Its many ether derivatives are excellent plasticizers, emulsifiers, and dispersing agents. There are a number of condensation polymers of similar properties and applications, among which are di-, tri-, and polyethylene glycols.
