Yarn in which slubs may be deliberately created to produce a desired effect.
A novelty yarn with soft, thick, untwisted lengths which alternate regularly with thin places in the thread. The slubs are made during spinning, and the distance between them varies according to the type of yarn desired. Slub yarns are generally made of cotton or wool, but are sometimes made of spun rayon and other man-made fibers, or blends. Single slub yarns are employed in different ways to make ply yarns.
Yarn of any type which is irregular in diameter; may be caused by error, or purposely made with slubs to bring out some desired effect to enhance a material.
An elongated nub on the surface of a yarn.Notes :
Generally, slub yarns are divided into two classes : (1) spun slubs, (2) plucked (or inserted) slubs. Spun slubs may be produced by an intermittent acceleration of one pair of rollers during spinning or by the blending of fibres of different dimensions. Plucked slub yarns are composed of two foundation threads and periodic short lengths of straight-fibred materials that have been plucked from a twistless roving by roller action.
Sometimes called cloud yarn. The name is also employed occasionally for flake yarn.
Slub yarns are popular as novelty threads in summer dress goods and find much use in hand-woven fabrics.Terme :
