A morphological term used to describe proliferation of the cells which form the glomerulus.
Note :
Although the mesangial and endothelial cells are most commonly affected, the epithelial cells of the parietal layer of Bowman's capsule may undergo proliferation and lead to crescent formation. A wide variety of aetiological agents may cause this type of reaction, but the condition which follows streptococcal infection is best understood. May also occur in the course of systemic disease such as Henoch-Schönlein purpura, systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa and Goodpasture's syndrome. Variants of proliferative glomerulonephritis include rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and mesangial IgA/IgG disease. Common clinical syndromes of proliferative glomerulonephritis are acute glomerulonephritis, symptomless proteinuria, recurrent haematuria, the nephrotic syndrome and chronic renal failure.
