A term applied to the formation of calculi in the urinary tract. The stones may be formed in the kidney, the kidney pelvis or the bladder. Aetiological factors include urinary stasis, hyperparathyroidism, metabolic disturbances, infections, dietary disorders, etc. The chemical composition varies with the cause, the commonest being calcium salts (phosphates, oxalates, carbonates) and uric acid; oxalic acid, xanthine, or cystine calculi are less common.
