Définition :
Pavillon de la marine marchande britannique et ancien pavillon de la marine marchande du Canada.
Note :
Le nom anglais, employé tel quel au Canada français dans la langue parlée, était également donné au drapeau provisoire qu'a eu le Canada de 1945 à 1965. (Dates fournies par Mme Filion du Cérémonial, Secrétariat d'État, Ottawa, le 86‑12‑19). Il s'agissait, en effet, du « Red Ensign » flanqué de l'écu des armoiries du Canada au centre de la moitié senestre du drapeau. Au cours de la Seconde guerre mondiale, les navires de la Marine royale canadienne arboraient le même pavillon (White Ensign) que la Royal Navy : croix de saint Georges rouge (sur fond blanc) avec l'« Union Jack » occupant le coin supérieur dextre. Avec d'autres armoiries, provinciales cette fois, le « Red Ensign » forme toujours la base du drapeau actuel de l'Ontario et du Manitoba. Quant à l'unifolié, qui a remplacé le pavillon des marines militaire et marchande, le Parlement canadien l'a adopté en 1964 et la proclamation royale a eu lieu le 15 février 1965 alors que le drapeau national actuel fut hissé sur l'édifice du parlement fédéral.

Three British ensigns are to be met with at sea, the White Ensign, the Blue Ensign, and the Red Ensign or "Red Duster". Originally, all three flags belonged to the Royal Navy, each division of a Fleet having a different colour. In practice, the three flags became confusing, especially in action, and, at the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson ordered all ships to wear the White Ensign, this white flag being much more easy to distinguish in the smoke of battle. In 1864, the Admiralty officially laid down that henceforth the White Ensign was to be the only ensign worn by ships of the Royal Navy. As a consequence, the Red Ensign, the senior colour, was adopted as a national ensign of Great Britain, and therefore taken as the merchant flag; the Blue Ensign was given to the Royal Naval Reserve. In the Merchant Navy, the Red Ensign is flown on entering and leaving a port; and, during the stay in port, from sunrise to sunset. It is not customary to hoist or haul down the ensign with ceremony.
