The umbilical cord in avian embryos consists of an outer tube continuous with the body wall, through which pass the supply vessels of the yolk-sac and allantois and also the veins and arteries from the membranes enclosing these two sacs. Before hatching the remaining yolk is withdrawn into the body cavity and the umbilicus finally closes at hatching when the chorio-allantoic membrane dries up.
