  Définition

  A milling machine with a horizontal spindle and a knee table; generally, though not always, transverse (cross or in-out) positioning of the workpiece is provided by a saddle guided by and movable in relation of the knee; in the absence of a saddle, provision for adjustment in the transverse direction is usually accomplished with a quill-mounted cutting spindle; cutters may be mounted on the spindle nose or on an arbor located and driven by the spindle nose.

  Note :

  Horizontal machines are further grouped as plain or universal; plain machines have the three movements afforded by the knee, saddle and table; universal machines have an additional movement which permits the table to be swiveled with respect to the saddle.
