Définition :
Dispositif destiné à mesurer la fragilité, surtout la sensibilité à l'entaille, soit par rotation d'un volant, soit par le choc d'un mouton en chute libre, soit par le choc d'un pendule (méthode Charpy); on évalue ensuite la quantité d'énergie qu'a absorbée la pièce rompue, comme dans l'épreuve Izod.

A test to measure brittleness, especially notch brittleness, in which a notched bar or other specimen is broken by the action of a rotating flywheel or by a blow from a monkey (or) tup (dropped weight) or from a pendulum as in the Charpy test, the energy absorbed by the broken specimen being thereupon ascertained as for instance in the Izod test.
