An organic acid, m.p. 122 0C (252° F), formed by attachment of a carboxyl group to a benzene ring, giving the formula C6H5COOH. It can be made from toluene either by oxidation or by chlorination to benzotrichloride, followed by hydrolysis. It can also be extracted from so-called benzoin gum (a balsamic resin) of which both benzoic acid and vanillin are components.
Note :
Large amounts of benzoic acid were used to make phenol, until recently, but this application has diminished in importance. It has been an antimicrobial preservative in food products since the early 1900's, in concentrations not exceeding 0.1%. It is also a mild antiseptic, vulcanization retarder for rubber, and intermediate in organic synthesis. Various benzoate compounds are derived from it.
Termes :
- benzoic acid
- benzene carboxylic acid
