To deprive a forest area of its legal status as a forest.
Note :
Antonyms: to reserve. English usage over the past 750 years has been loose. De- and dis-(af)forest have all been used in the sense of dereserve, and de- or dis-forest also in the physical sense. As neither de- or dis-afforest are true antonyms of afforest, whereas dereserve has reserve as its proper antonym, retention of dereserve as the keyterm seems justifiable.
