Définition :
Matériel transparent ou opaque d'une surface lisse, convenant à l'écriture, la reliure ou à d'autres usages. Provient de peaux minces de moutons, chèvres, veaux, porcs ou ânes et est obtenu par séchage de la peau chaulée, non tannée, puis soigneusement nettoyée, dégraissée et lissée.
Note :
En Espagne, il n'y a pas de différence entre le parchemin (fait d'une peau non sciée) et le velin (produit avec une peau sciée). Au Royaume-Uni, le parchemin est fait sur une croûte, principalement de mouton.

Translucent or opaque material with a smooth surface suitable for writing, bookbinding and other purposes.
Notes :
It is made from thin skins of sheep, goat, calf, pig or ass, by drying out the limed material without applying any tannage, the material being thoroughly cleansed, degreased and smoothed during the process.
In the U.K. parchement is made from the flesh split of the skin and usually of a sheepskin. In Spain no differentiation is made between "parchemin" (which is made from a split skin' and "vellum" (which is made from an unsplit skin).Terme :
