A cutan is a modification of the texture, structure, or fabric at natural surfaces in soil materials due to concentration of particular soil constituents or in situ modification of the plasma; cutans can be composed of any of the component substances of the soil material.
Notes :
General terms used to indicate cutanic features: clay skin, coating.
Cutans are named according to: 1) the surfaces affected: grain cutans, ped cutans, channel cutans, plane cutans, normal void cutans; 2) composition of the cutanic material: argillan, calcan, calcitan, chalcedan, ferran, ferri-argillan, gibbsan, goethan, gypsan, halan, hermatan, humican, kaolinan, mangan, matran, organan, organo-argillan, palygorskan, plasman, plasman-skeletan, quartzan, sesquan, silan, skeletan, soluan; 3) the complexity of the cutanic material: compound cutan, heterogeneous stratified flow accumulation, homogeneous flow accumulation, homogeneous stratified flow accumulation, simple cutan; 4) interpretation of the process of formation: diffusion cutans, illuviation cutans, flow accumulations, flow structures, stress cutans, complex cutans, agricutan, debris cutan, modexan, polynite, scatan, vermicutan, wrapping cutans.
Terms indicating the degree of adhesion of a feature to the encasing soil material (used for the description of e.g. cutans, glaebules and pedotubules): discrete, weakly adhesive, moderately adhesive, strongly adhesive.Terme :
