A complex, incompletely understood formation between humic acids and clays, the two components being mechanically inseparable and chemically separable only with great difficulty.
Notes :
Microscopically, well developed clay-humus complexes in which humic acids appear as an absorbed dye on the clay substance (brown coloured clays) are easily distinguished from simple mixtures of humus and mineral constituents.
