Définition :
Représentation d'observations statistiques par des grandeurs géométriques ou des figure en vue d'obtenir des données numériques une image permettant d'en saisir rapidement l'ensemble des éléments fondamentaux : caractéristiques d'une distribution, liaison entre deux variables, comparaison des variations, relation entre des observations et leurs origines géographiques, etc.
Note :
Le Petit Robert (1977, p. 885) dit que graphique, par extension de sens, désigne toute représentation graphique. Il nous semble plutôt que le mouvement inverse se soit produit et que graphique soit la forme elliptique de représentation graphique. Subséquemment, graphique a pu prendre la forme étoffée de graphique statistique.

Le terme diagramme a un sens générique qui correspond à la notion représentation graphique, et un sens spécifique qui correspond à la courbe du graphique linéaire. Évidemment, pour cette rubrique, c'est la première acception qui nous intéresse.

Note :
In practice, most authors tend to use the terms graph and chart as perfect synonyms. In defining these same terms, however, they sense a difference but there is no consensus as to what the distinction is. The problem probably arises from the fact that the ellipse, graph, has a generic meaning which encompasses all graphical representations, and a specific meaning limited to the line graph, and by extended meaning, to the curve of the line graph. The chart, on the other hand, seems to refer more specifically to graphical representations made up of figures or symbols such as bars or columns. The following context clearly illustrates the problem: "All illustrations of line graphs and statistical charts ((...)) are taken substantially unchanged from various publications".
