A pipeline crossing a depression or passing under a structure and having a reversal in grade on a portion of the line, thus creating a V- or U-shaped section of conduit. The line is under positive pressure from inlet to outlet and should not be confused with a siphon.
Notes :
The term inverted siphon is common but inappropriate, as no siphonic action is involved.
Nevertheless, as for the term inverted siphon, it is preferable to restrict the use of these words to cases where siphonic action is involved.Termes :
- inverted siphon
- depressed sewer
- sag pipe
- sag line
- sag bag
- syphon
- siphon
The suggested terms sag pipe, sag line and sag bag are less frequently used, but are very expressive and appropriate.
The spellings syphon and siphon have generally been used indiscriminately.
The term siphon is sometimes used in irrigation to describe inverted siphons.
