It has a cuplike shape and is composed of nonchromatin material. During the process of cell division, the chromosomes become duplicated in the late resting stage (interphase). The resulting two chromatids are held together by the centromere until, at the metaphase, the centromere divides and each daughter centromere progresses, with the aid of the spindle apparatus, to opposite poles of the cell.
