A common unit employed to enable oil, gas, nuclear and hydro-electricity, hard coal, brown coal and other forms of energy to be directly compared from the point of view of their fuel value; conversion of fuels to their coal equivalents depends mainly, but not necessarily exclusively, on their calorific value.
Note :
The actual conversion factors used may vary from one country or authority to another. In French and German speaking countries 29.3 GJ (approx. 7000 Mcal) is the net calorific value of one tonne of coal equivalent for the purposes of calculation (i.e. 282 therms per ton of coal equivalent).
