An element. State: solid; group: IIB (actinide series); atomic no.: 100; atomic wt.: 254(?); valence: 3. Discovered in 1953 and named after Enrico Fermi, an Italian scientist (1901-1954), Nobel Prize 1938, fermium is one of the artificially made radioactive members of the transuranic series, which is part of the actinide series of elements. The 254 isotope has a half life of 3.24 hours; though the 257 isotope half life is 97 days, its production is not feasible. The use of fermium is confined to tracer work.
