Date :Définition
An element. State: solid; group: actinide series; atomic no.: 97; atomic wt.: 243(?); valence: 3,4. Berkelium was discovered in 1949, at Berkeley, California, in the form of Bk243 as a product of the cyclotron bombardment of americium isotope 241 with helium ions. The eighth member of the actinide transition series, it is a radioactive transuranium element. Berkelium metal, m.p. 986 °C (1807 °F), has been prepared and several compounds, chiefly oxides and halides of oxidation states 3 and 4, have been identified. Larger amounts of the 249 isotope have been made so that its properties can be investigated. This isotope is made by intense neutron bombardment of curium 244. There are as yet no known uses of berkelium.
