Americium, m.p. 1000 °C (1832 °F), is an artificial transuranic element, discovered in 1944, which exists only as radioisotopes. It is a whitish crystalline metal of the bone-seeking type, emetting gamma radiation. The isotope with longest half-life is 243 (77000 years); next longest is 241 (430 years). It forms a large number of compounds with fluorine, oxygen, potassium, etc. It is used in radiography because of its gamma emission and as a source of curium isotopes.
