Date :Définition
An unsaturated tricyclic compound, sublimes 286 °C (547 °F), belonging to the general class of quinones. It can be made by oxidation of anthracene with chromic anhydride or by condensation of phthalic anhydride with benzene, followed by dehydration. The semi-structural formula is C6H4(C=O)2C6H4. The two benzenoid rings and the two carbonyl groups function as chromophores (color bearers); thus, this compound is the parent of a large and important group of organic dyes.
Note :
Many of the derivatives of anthraquinone have an added heterocyclic nucleus. Anthraquinone dyes include acid or mordant, disperse, and vat types. The disperse dyes, originally limited to acetate fibers, have grown in importance since the proliferation of synthetic fibers in recent years. Many of the vat (or reduced) dyes were developed in the early years of this century; the first of these was indanthrone, which dates back to 1901. Because of their alkaline nature, vat dyes are used chiefly for cellulosic fibers such as cotton and rayon.
