  Définition

  A univalent group derived from aromatic hydrocarbons and having the ring structure characteristic of benzene and its derivatives. Examples are phenyl (C₆H₅) and benzyl (C₆H₅CH₂). Such groups are often represented in general formulas by the letter R.

  Note :

  Compounds made up of both aryl and alkyl groups are sometimes called aralkyl (a shortened form of arylalkyl), e.g., alkylbenzene sulfonate.
