A monohydric aromatic alcohol, b.p. 206 °C (403 °F). Having the formula C6H5CH2OH; it is obtained by hydrolyzing other benzyl compounds, such as the chloride or the acetate. It is a good solvent for cellulose esters, waxes, resins, and similar materials. It is not as flammable as many other alcohols and has little toxic effect. It is used in suntan preparations and other cosmetics and to some extent as a local anesthesic; also in soaps, inks, and coating formulations.
