A salt of an alkyl dithiocarbonic acid in which the acidic portion of the molecule is represented by OCSSH, the alkyl substituent usually being an ethyl group and the metal, one of the alkali series (sodium or potassium).
Note :
Xanthates of this type are used in metal separation operations. The most familiar variation is cellulose xanthate, used in the viscose rayon process; it is obtained by reacting alpha-cellulose with carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide. Xanthates have a characteristic organe-yellow color, from which the name is derived.
